Sacramento Valley Soaring Society is excited to announce the SVSS Soaring Challenge for 2013.  This is our 22nd annual two-day thermal duration contest held in Sacramento California.  It’s a two-day contest that spans three days of fun, June 21st through June 23rd.  The field will be open and winches available on Friday the 21st, for fun flying and practice.  Contest days are Saturday 6/22 and Sunday 6/23.  On both days, the pilot’s meeting is at 8:45 and flying starts at 9:00.

Classes - The classes offered are: Unlimited, 2-Meter, RES, Nostalgia and ALES.  Woody class sailplanes are welcome but will fly in their span/function class.  Junior, Senior, Open combined, no Gray Cup class.  ALES will be scored as a single class, no subclasses.  ALES class will be integrated into the overall flight order matrix, will launch in sequence similar to all other classes, and will use the same graduated landing as Unlimited. 

Entries - You may enter in one or two classes.

Frequency Control - Entry on 72 MHz is limited to 4 entries per frequency, no exceptions without permission of the CD. There will be no transmitter impound, 2.4 GHz is encouraged

Alerts - In order to keep the flight order moving; 1) pilots must respond to their call up within 5 minutes or they'll get a zero for the round.  2) Entry on 72 MHz is limited to 2 entries per channel.  No exceptions!  2.4 GHz is encouraged.

Tasks and Times - Thermal Duration, 5 minute first flight, 10 minutes thereafter. Pilots meeting at 8:30 AM Saturday and Sunday, first flight immediately after. The round in effect at 4:00 PM Saturday and 2:00 PM Sunday will be the last round of the day.

Landings -  25' graduated landing tape.  Nostalgia will be 25 points in or out.

Awards - Trophies will be awarded as follows; 1st - 5th place in Unlimited, 1st - 3rd in RES, 1st & 2nd in 2-Meter, Nostalgia and ALES.  The trophies will awarded based on the best combined, 2 day scores.

Lodging - There are many motels and hotels nearby.  Check the "Lodging" page for locations, rates and reservation numbers. 

Food – Your entry fee includes lunch at the field for both days.  Of course you may bring your own food but there will be no discount on your entry fee.

ALES Event - We will host a separate ALES (only) event on Friday, June 21st, run by Aric Wilmunder. The fee for this event will be determined separately and paid for at the field upon registration. Tentative start times are registration 11:30 AM - 12:00 PM, pilots meeting at 12:00 PM and first round immediately thereafter. We will finalize this event based on participation, signaled by PM to the CD (jtlsf) no later than 6:00 PM, Tuesday June 18th. If we do not get at least 10 confirmed participants the ALES event by this time, the Friday ALES be cancelled and the field will be open all day for sport flying.

Friday, June 21 Open Flying - The field will be available for open flying on Friday with the exception of an approximately 2-3 hour window beginning at 12:00 noon for a planned ALES contest. During the ALES event there will be no open flying. If there are not enough entries (<=10) in the ALES event, the ALES event will be cancelled and the field will be available for open flying all day.
